When we think of renowned Hollywood movie actors, one of the first names that comes to mind is Robert De Niro. This actor has played a variety of characters who have become worldwide classics, but he won our hearts with his remarkable charisma. Meryl Streep, who was among the first to experience De Niro's generosity, is a good witness.
From minor actor to a Hollywood star
De Niro was born in 1943 in New York City and his parents were painters, so we could say that creativity runs in his veins. He was studying acting at a conservatory when, at the age of 16, he dropped out and began working in tiny productions on Broadway. His talent was undeniable, thus he was cast in minor roles in films, always as aggressive or angry characters.
Finally, he collaborated on the film Mean Streets with director Martin Scorsese. This performance was crucial to his career because it impressed filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, who offered him a role in The Godfather II, for which he won his first Academy Award. As a result, his career progressed until he became the cranky old man we all know in today's movies.
His great charisma
Despite his successful career and widespread popularity, De Niro never lost sight of the ordinary man he was before stardom. He frequently emphasizes the importance of not taking opportunities for granted: "You have to be very careful with fame because it's so transitory," he said in an interview. "No one is necessary. You must use caution. Just make the best of it, perform your job, and be grateful you got where you did."
Many Hollywood stars were smitten by his charming nature. You can tell because he has great friendships. Consider Al Pacino, whose career grew alongside Robert's, or Robin Williams, who formed a lengthy friendship with our actor after accidently dislocating his nose during filming. But Meryl Streep's relationship is the most well-known and beloved by admirers.
How De Niro’s kindness impressed Meryl Streep
Meryl used to be John Cazale's girlfriend and used to appear in minor plays. Cazale was a fantastic actress. He made an appearance in The Godfather, and they were madly in love. However, the couple was experiencing financial difficulties. These were exacerbated when they learnt that John had terminal cancer and that they would be unable to fund his medical expenditures. They were given the opportunity to work on the film The Deer Hunter, starring Robert De Niro, at the time.
Unfortunately, due of John's diagnosis, the production team chose to terminate him because the cost of his medical insurance was prohibitively expensive. De Niro opted to avoid this by agreeing to pay for his own insurance. He also threatened to quit if John was dismissed, and insisted that Cazale's sequences be the first to be shot so that he could go to the doctor. "He was sicker than we imagined, but I wanted him in the film," De Niro explained.
The great friendship that was born thereafter
That gesture of generosity moved the actress. It could only mean the beginning of a wonderful friendship between the two Oscar winners. They have appeared in three films together and have openly shown their support and admiration for one another. On these instances, you can sense their warmth and affection for one another, which is rare in friendship.
De Niro even said in a speech before presenting Streep with an award, “Meryl seems to have no imperfections. And I say that with the greatest love for you, Meryl. I love you very much.”
