Exams used to be about reviewing what we had studied. Since learning is a long-term process that never ends, it might be challenging to assess students' progress without regular exams. A good education is crucial. And tests were taken seriously, at least we believed they were. It's safe to say that the days of getting whacked on the hands for writing or drawing "inappropriate responses" on our tests are long gone. For children nowadays, providing the correct answers is less important than demonstrating their intelligence.
