What is the oldest moving animal you have ever seen? 100 years? 110? 120? Well, we would like you to meet Jonathan, the oldest animal in the world. He has seen most of the modern inventions and has already outlived his contemporaries. Look at his current health situation.
Oldest Animal
Just to give you an idea of this old man's age, he has already 7 monarchs on the British throne, the invention of light bulbs and motorized cars, the completion of the Eiffel Tower, and the first skyscraper! Much more than what any of us can imagine as well, right?
The Origins
Jonathan is a Seychelles giant tortoise who was brought from Seychelles to Saint Helena Island in 1882. You must've heard about this calm and peaceful island as a place of Napoleon’s exile. Jonathan has been living on the grounds of the Plantation House, the official residence of the governor. He's seen multiple people occupying that house as well.
Estimated Age
Nobody really knows his actual age for sure. It is believed that he already reached his full adult size when he arrived at the island, meaning that he was around 50 years old at that time. So the vets believe that he could’ve been born in 1832 and is 187-188 years old now. Now that is really really old.
His Health
The average life expectancy for a tortoise of his species is about 150 years. This means that Jonathan has already outlived all his fellow tortoises by more than 30 years! As far as his health is concerned, Jonathan is blind from cataracts, has lost his sense of smell, and can’t detect food anymore, he’s still going strong. Except for these age-related things, he’s doing well health-wise and lives his best chilled-out life on the island. Sounds great. Maybe he can be around for another 50 to be honest. We wish him the best of luck and health now.
