The economy was in transition between the First and Second Industrial Revolutions in addition to the political unrest. In nations like England and France, manufacturing underwent a significant development at the end of the 18th century. After this innovation, by the middle of the 19th century, Germany, Italy, and the United States were rapidly catching up and developing into independent economic superpowers.
