Lets face it our education in schools doesn't really prepare us for everything in life. There is always a lot of learning we got to do all by ourselves, when we are growing up. And to be honest, each one of us is constantly learning. Especially when it comes to knowing stuff about the earth. The world is such a fascinating place that many things seem unusual and unreal. Take for instance these facts, they are so unique that we bet you've not heard of this before!

DIOMEDE ISLANDS!

This is one of the most disputed and harsh geographical terrains in the world and rightly so because it is divided between two super powers - Russia & USA. The islands located in the middle of Bering Strait between mainland Alaska and Siberia have two extreme time zones (21 hours of a difference) The USA part is called Little Diomede or Yesterday Island because it is almost a whole day behind the Russian half of the island. The Russian part is called Tomorrow Island or Big Diomede!



THE TRUTH ABOUT MOUNTAINS!

It is said that the Appalachian mountains are shrinking by the day and the Himalayas are growing taller by the day. The Appalachian mountains or North America are said to be shrinking due to the large scale erosion happening along the sides. This makes it appear like it is becoming shorter. The Himalayas on the other hand are said to be growing by 1 cm each year due to the movement of tectonic plates. However, erosion and weather changes are slowing down this rapid growth!

ER WANG DONG CAVE, CHINA!

This cave is so huge that it has multiple weather systems within it. Located in the Chongqing Municipality of China, a region well known for its limestone Karst formations, this cave has everything from a dense forest to a gushing river, blinding fog of clouds and the extreme heat and cold. Isn't that amazing?



DON JUAN POND!

This lakes salinity is off the charts, seriously! Located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antartica, a region where it never snows and rarely rains, the lake is over 40% significantly saltier than most hypersaline lakes in the world. Filled with salts like Calcium chloride, even though the temperature drops to -50 in the winters, the salinity of this lake prevents it from freezing. Intense, isn't it?

PHEASANT ISLAND!

River Bidasoa runs between Spain and France. An island called the Pheasant Island is located on this river and happens to be a shared property of both the nations. The administration keeps alternating between both nations, thus making it one of the few places on earth with dual national governance!



LARGEST DESERT IN THE WORLD!
