Doctors Once Wondered If He Would Ever Live Independently Years Later, Fox Ryker Was Studying to Become a Doctor Himself

As a child, Fox Ryker was diagnosed with autism and was nonverbal until age 4. Doctors were unsure whether he would ever live independently. Years later, he graduated with honors, worked in emergency medicine, and entered medical school.

From a Nonverbal Child to a College Graduate

Fox Ryker was diagnosed with moderate autism spectrum disorder as a child and was nonverbal until age 4. He attended several schools and spent about a decade in therapy. Despite the challenges, he graduated magna cum laude in physics from Saint Joseph’s University and was inducted into academic honor societies.

He Worked in Emergency Medicine Before Medical School

Before becoming a medical student, Fox worked as an EMT and emergency room technician at Paoli Hospital for a combined four years. Dr. Stuart Brillant described him as hardworking and compassionate and said he only learned about Fox’s autism diagnosis after reading his medical school application.

Now, He Is Training to Become a Doctor

Fox was accepted into the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine’s DO program as part of the Class of 2027. He has openly shared his experience with autism through PCOM’s Neurodiversity in Medicine feature. He was also inducted into Sigma Sigma Phi, led his class in reciting PCOM’s mission statement at the White Coat Ceremony, and has contributed to clinical research through Thomas Jefferson University’s Department of Neurological Surgery.
