RIVER URMIA, IRAN

The lake Urmia in Iran is no longer a mass of clear, blue, pristine water. It is red due to a variety of reasons. Since years, Lake Urmia has been shrinking and what was once the largest lake in the middle east is now looking like a massive crime scene due to the presence of all sorts of microorganisms. The drought and drying up of the lake caused it to become highly salty and this attracted the Dunaliella algae, which can turn the water blood-red.
