We all have our favorites when it comes to food. These edibles are perhaps your favorites too. But like all good things, our favorite foods also have some secrets that go behind their making. If you knew these secrets, we doubt you will want to consume it again!
ICE CREAM!
You or atleast someone you know likes Vanilla flavoured icecreams right? I mean for every chocolate in the world, there is a vanilla and we are yet to come across a person who finds the taste repulsing. Now what would you do if we told you the smell and the taste of vanilla was actually the byproduct of a chemical that comes from beavers butts? Don't believe us? Well in 2013, TIME magazine published an article that said and verified Castoreum - an ingredient that is found in vanilla essence is fact procured from beaver poo. Perfumes, soaps and basically every other product that can be made with vanilla uses this chemical!
JELLY
Ever heard of the term shellac? You must have glanced upon it while eating jelly beans, candy or any other chewable sweet. You would also find the term on the covers of lipsticks, perfumes etc. Shellac is nothing but the remains of an insect called Female Lac Bug that breeds in the tropical forests of Asia.
CANNED MUSHROOMS!
Canned Mushrooms and basically all canned products are a perfect place to find all possible worms. Yes. Worms are either introduced to the cans or grow there themselves. They multiply and as long as they are below the minimum mark, the FDA does not interfere with the batches. So believe it or not, your canned food has some amount of worms in it for sure!
MARSHMELLOW!
Marshmellow is not vegetarian if you thought it was. In fact like most things in this article, even Marshmellow has a super gross backstory. Gelatin - a product used in the making of marshmellow is obtained from the bones and skin of bovines. So basically what happens is the leftover bones and skin from the meat industry are collected and boiled to create a sticky glue like substance called gelatin!
SKITTLES!
Insects called Cochineal live on cacti plants and are native to Latin America. They are harvested specially to produce the crimson red color that you get on your lipsticks, skittles etc. So the next time you consume a red candy, know that is probably came from an insect remains!
BEER!
Beer is not vegetarian if you thought it was and this piece of information is going to perhaps dissuade you from drinking beer with your buddies again. But know this - For more than 700 years people have been fooled about the contents of this drink. The brewing companies add a product called Isinglass is a product used for clarification and most of the "craft brewing" units around you use this particular element. Imagine fish skin in your drink. Sounds stinky doesn't it? Well it is what it is!
