Our ancestors were supremely crazy. When you will further read about the medical treatments they would subject other humans too, you will believe our first statement! These treatments were inhuman and we really hope they never come back!

The Delivery

You know how delivering a baby is yet a challenge for every mother out there even with so many modern techniques and machinery? Well, it must be such a pain in the past, right? In ancient India, they knew how to change the position of the fetus in utero. And so, did you know, Mothers delivered babies standing or sitting on their haunches.

Local Anesthesia

You know how important local anesthesia is when it comes to surgeries? Well, turns out our ancestors were better at it than us! They achieved massive success in surgeries. They used juniper and mandrake extracts as anesthesia. And apparently it worked great!

Bloodletting

Now this may come as a massive surprise! Almost every disease out there was cured by bloodletting in ancient times. It was specifically very popular in India, Arab nations, Greece and Egypt. It was believed that blood contained "bad humors," which had to be let out to cure the patient. Imagine a doctor doing something like that with you today!

Popular Enema

What we are about to tell you may be extremely shocking for you. Brace yourselves for this information. Digestion problems, somnolence, stomach cramps, and parasites were all treated with a tobacco smoke enema, a method adopted from North American Indians. Yes, you read that right. It was an extremely popular kind of treatment.

Skull trephination

Headaches, epilepsy, and other psychological disorders had a rather inhuman treatment in the past. Doctors would drill holes in the skull! Trephination is the oldest surgical operation ever!

Toothache Treatment

Be thankful to your dentists for not treating your toothache the way people would treat it in the past. Some ancient methods were quite unusual. Avicenna recommended smoking the patient with a burning mixture of goat fat, henbane, and onion as a dental treatment. Now if this comes as a surprising piece of information, wait till you read more.

Pliny the Elder believed that the only way to get rid of toothache was catching a toad at midnight, spitting in its mouth, and saying special "curing" words. Now are you thankful to your dentist? You better be!
