You might've heard the saying that 'old is gold' and so are these refreshing pictures from our past. They believed that photos made the past more accessible by giving a solid shape to a world that sometimes appears immaterial. Lets have a look at them now.

Picture taken in 1979 shows a beach in Iran just a few months before the Islamic revolution could take place.

In the decades before the Islamic revolution of 1979, Iran was ruled by the Shah whose dictatorship repressed dissent and restricted political freedoms. But he also he pushed the country to adopt Western-oriented secular modernization, allowing some degree of cultural freedom.

Still, for a period of close to 40 years, the Shah led Iran through a series of sweeping changes.

Genepil was the last queen consort of Mongolia, married to Bogd Khan. She was queen consort for less than a year in 1924. Genepil was executed in May 1938 as part of the Stalinist repressions in Mongolia.

This picture was taken just minutes before Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated, leading to WW1.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated on 28 June 1914 by Bosnian Serb student Gavrilo Princip, shot at close range while being driven through Sarajevo, the provincial capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, formally annexed by Austria-Hungary in 1908.



During the 1918 influenza pandemic in California, rail commuters wore white protective masks, one of which said, "Wear A Mask Or Go To Jail."

The sign worn by the woman on the right, reading "WEAR A MASK OR GO TO JAIL," reflects local and state mask ordinances that had gone into effect that fall.
