In the last century, technology and consumer products have changed drastically. Modern-day conveniences like computers were barely even a thought, and everyday technologies like washing machines and traffic lights are hardly recognizable when compared with their 21st-century counterparts. The photos below, which compare modern objects, places, and technology with those of the past, shed some light on the progress of the last century.

Considering what everyday objects looked like in the past helps us understand how we've developed as a society and how appreciative we should be of today's conveniences – we can even track this change and anticipate the evolution of the future. Peruse the photos below and marvel at our past, present, and potential future.

Showers

Taking a shower is a more practical choice for everyday use than bathtubs, it’s quicker and less water is used. But back in the day, showers looked quite different. It had a round metal cage structure with a cloth shower curtain. Looks very weird. It also didn’t allow much freedom of movement.

Nowadays, the designs are much more spacious, super comfortable easy to use and they tend to be square in shape. A bench can even be incorporated inside you can shower sitting down. Interesting, right?

Playgrounds

Kids love to play and socialize, it’s part of their healthy development, which is why playgrounds have always been so popular. Irrespective of the time period, it has always been popular. As you can see here, there are many differences between modern playgrounds and the ones from the early 1900s. It looks like a different thing altogether. So different from what we have now.

The monkey bars of the old ones are incredibly high and seem quite dangerous. But the modern monkey bars are lower and made out of plastic as well as metal and many other safe materials.

Football Helmets

American football helmets have gone through an incredible transformation in the past few decades and it is stunning to see the change. New technologies and materials have been developed since then, making helmets lighter and a lot safer. The design has improved drastically.

Old helmets were mostly made out of leather materials and provided little protection to the player. Today’s helmets are made out of hard plastic with thick padding on the inside that can cushion impact very well. They come incorporated with metal face guards and chin straps.

Calculator

We all love using calculators. It is a need now. For many decades, calculators have been every student’s best friend during math quizzes. But they weren’t always so practical and user friendly. At least not as user friendly as they are now. As you can see in the picture, old calculators resembled a typewriter.

They were used to perform simple calculations since they could not carry out complex scientific tasks. Modern calculators are much smaller and a lot easier to use. They can perform an array of complex calculations and the results come out instantly.

Phones

Phones have experienced radical changes ever since they were invented and we all know how drastic the change is. Old phones could only be used to make or receive phone calls, they depended on cables for connectivity and very few houses had them.

Today, smartphones are a big part of our way of communicating with the world. They are wireless which allow you to carry your phone wherever you go. They contain useful apps, access to the internet, and have high-definition cameras incorporated. Thank god for the change, right?

Radios

Let's learn something new about radios today. Radios were first invented as a means of communication between ships, then after it developed into news broadcasting, advertisement of products and entertainment. But they weren't close to what they are today. In the early 1920s radios were bulky and required manual tuning to catch the right wavelength.

With time they became smaller, more sophisticated and easier to use. They don’t even require antennas or disposable batteries anymore. You can download a radio app to your smartphone and listen to your favorite shows there. Today, we hardly use them, right?
