The size of a country depends on its population, but also majorly on the land it possess. This world is divided into different kind of nations - warring, peaceful, big, small, developed, developing, not developing etc. While there is a safe space for each and every kind, there is also an incessant need to be great and powerful. These 9 nations may be the smallest in the world but great in their own right!

NIUE

This tiny island in South Pacific Ocean is about 261 sq.km big and its citizens, predominantly Polynesian are about 1190 people. A coral reef surrounds this island, with a major break in the reef being close to the capital city of Alofi, in its central western coast. The country has only one airport and only Air New Zealand flies a flight every week from Auckland and back. Tourism, Agriculture and Fisheries are major industries in Niue!

SAINT KITTS AND NEVIS!

Officially known as the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, this island country is located in the Caribbean Sea, close to West Indies. It is the smallest state in Western Hemisphere and is a Commonwealth country with Queen Elizabeth II as Queen and head of state. In fact, the country was very much a part of Great Britain till very recently and only gained an independent status in 1983.

PRINCIPALITY OF HUTT RIVER!

In 1970 Leonard Casley declared that his farm land was an independent country. This was due to some conflicts with the Australian government concerning wheat production quotas. He soon started printing his own currency, designed his own flag etc. He also started referring to himself as Prince Leonard and granted royalty status to his friends and family members. At the age of 91, in 2017, he gave his youngest son the power to rule this Principality of Hutt River. Leonard Casley died in 2019. After his death the principality announced that it will close its borders until further notice. As of 3rd August 2020, this rule was applied and Principality of Hutt River closed to the outside world forever.

PALAU

The Republic of Palau is an island country located in West Pacific Ocean. It has about 340 islands in a cluster and connects with parts of Micronesia. Palau occupies about 460 sq.kms in total and the people here are called Palaun. Bordering countries are Micronesia, Indonesia, Philippines etc. At different points in history, the island has been under the control of Spain, Germany, Japan etc. Presently it receives support from USA.

NAURU!

This tiny island in the Central Pacific Ocean was formerly called Pleasant Island. Today, officially called the Republic of Nauru, the country is populated by people from Micronesia and Polynesia. They could have come to settle down here sometime in 1000 CE. The total area this country has is about 21 sq. km. During World War II, Nauru was occupied by Japanese troops!

REPUBLIC OF MOLOSSIA!

Imagine a gentleman going on a whim and claiming his land as a country, and his family - as his subjects. That is exactly how twisted the Republic of Molossia is. Kevin Baugh in 1977 took over the land he and his family owned and declared it a sovereign state, independent from America. The island consists of 7 people - which just happens to be Baugh's family. Molossia has its laws and regulations in place, including death penalties. They also have their own emblem, national flag, etc. In 2021, the country has successfully completed 43 years of existence. However, it is not legally or formally acknowledged or accredited by United Nations or any other nation!
